The Matanzima Story

Matanzima Hot Sauce originates from the KwaZulu-Natal (Zululand) region of South Africa, where Indian migrant workers first settled in the late 1800's. (Did you know that Mahatma Gandhi started his career as an attorney in South Africa?)

These Indian immigrants brought with them a love of spicy food, and this influence has spread, to the point where chilies, peppers and hot sauces are now used with many traditional African dishes. Chilies and dried spice powders can be found at most open air markets in the region, and many also carry local home made hot sauces.

This is the heritage of Matanzima Hot Sauce – the recipe itself was developed by a long time family friend who grew up in India and moved to South Africa as a young man in the 1960’s. Using African chilies, Indian spices, the freshest local ingredients, and never any preservatives or coloring, it is truly an African taste, unlike anything else you’re gonna find in the hot sauce aisle in your super market.
